WHAT IS AUTISM
Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a condition that affects how a person thinks, feels, and interacts.

Autism is a spectrum and affects everyone differently. Some people may be able to tolerate bright lights, some may not. Some people may be able to tolerate large crowds, some may not.

WHAT CHALLENGES DO PEOPLE WITH AUTISM FACE?
Not everyone on the autism spectrum faces the same challenges and difficulties, but people with autism can struggle with social skills and their ability to interact with others.

People with autism like to stick to a routine, and can get upset if that routine is disrupted. People with autism also often struggle with sensory issues. You might be able to deal with a tag on the back of your shirt, but for a person with autism, that could cause them to become overwhelmed, same with bright lights and loud noices.
HOW TO SUPPORT PEOPLE WITH AUTISM
Everyone's needs are different, and it is important to keep that in mind when supporting someone with autism. It is important to remember that people with autism can struggle in a social situation, so they may not make eye contact with you or laugh at your jokes. But don't get mad, they are just trying to comprehend everything going on in the world around them.

Don't force someone with autism to shake your hand or give you a high five, they might be sensitive to touch, or just need some time to get comfortable with you. People with autism take a bit longer to adjust to change and new things, so give us a bit more time to get to know you.

If you run a business, or just want to keep your house more autism-friendly, try and use as much natural lighting as possible. Harsh lighting can be overwhelming for some people. Also, keep the music down. The number of times a good shopping experience has been ruined because the music was too loud is crazy.

At the end of the day, if you can only do one thing to support someone with autism, just be patient. Patience can go a long way when people with autism are trying to read social cues, and trying to tune out all the background noise behind you.
